Hockey India League final: Delhi beat Punjab 3-1 in penalty shoot-out to win the title
Ranchi: Delhi Waveriders defeated Jaypee Punjab Warriors in the penalty shoot-out to emerge as the champions in the second edition of Hero Hockey India League at the packed Astroturf Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.
It came as a befitting result for last year's runners-up Waveriders, who made their second consecutive final of HIL. The Waveriders beat Warriors 3-1 in the shoot-out after the regulation 70 minutes ended in a 3-3 tie.
Majority of the credit should go to the Waveriders goalie Nicolas Jacobi, who had a brilliant day under the bar and made numerous saves to guide the Delhi side to the title.
Apart from making quite a few saves in the regulation time, Jacobi stood like a rock in the shoot-out to deny Warriors' first three attempts before Robert Hammond scored from the one-on-one situation.
But it was not enough as the Waveriders scored three out of their four chances in the shoot-out to run away with the glittering trophy and Rs 2.5 crore prize purse.
The Warriors took home Rs 1.25 crore, while the last year's champions Ranchi Rhinos pocketed Rs 75 lakh for finishing third. Start the Car

Machhindra Football Club (MFC) thumped leaders Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) 4-0 in the Martyrs Memorial A Division League here at the Dashrath Stadium on Monday.
An own goal from Sujal Shrestha opened the scoring for MFC while midfielder Sushil KC’s brace and leading scorer Karna Limbu’s goal in the second-half completed the MMC drubbing.
MFC climbed to third in the points table with the comprehensive win on 25 points from 14 games, four behind MMC. The result provides second-placed Nepal Police Club (26) and defending champions Three Star Club (25) more room to stake their claims for title.
MFC took the lead in unlikely fashion in the 26th minute when custodian Bishal Shrestha and Sujal Shrestha both rushed to receive a Sagar Thapa pass inside the area only to see make-shift left-back needlessly head the ball back opposite his goalkeeper and into the net.
To add to the MMC misery, they resumed the second half without injured Yona Elias and suffered another major blow when Limbu doubled MFC lead with his ninth goal of the league, coolly guiding the ball past goalkeeper Bishal in the 52nd minute.
A sublime strike from KC then made the score 3-0 when the midfielder cleverly cut in from the right flank and fired a powerful left-footed strike into the roof of the net in 55th minute. KC compounded the MMC misery even further slotting in from close range after the ball rebounded off the cross bar from Chrisope Essome’s powerful strike in the 71st minute.
MFC’s Swedish Coach Johan Kalin he was not anticipating such a comprehensive victory. “We played for the three points for sure, but we were not expecting a 4-0 scoreline against the league leaders,” said Kalin. “Every player followed our game plan and we did well to convert our chances. Now we want to take maximum points from our remaining matches and finish as high as possible,” added Kalin.
MMC coach Hari Om Shrestha criticised his team’s weak defending and said that his team may not win the league if they do not improve defense. “I do not think we are going to win the title if we continue defending as poorly as we did today. We were outplayed in every department but the players must learn from their mistakes quickly,” said Shrestha.

Nepal’s hopes of winning the ACC Women’s Premier cricket tournament title ended with a 69-run loss to China at the Gymkhana ground in Chaing Mai, Thailand, on Sunday.
Electing to bat first, China made mediocre 159-8 in 40 overs before dismissing Nepal for 90 runs in 36.1 overs. China will now play for the title match against Thailand who have better net run-rate but equal eight points from four games.
Thailand beat Iran by 161 runs to set Tuesday’s title decider. Nepal, meanwhile, fell to fourth on four points with a game to spare. Hong Kong, who also have four points, hold third position on better net run-rate.
China failed to build a big partnership but, despite the setback, they were able to put on a competitive total. Zhang Mei top scored for China with 31 off 57 balls while Liu Xiaonan contributed 65-ball 26. Zou Miao and Wang Meng also chipped in crucial 15 runs each to their total. Nepal employed seven bowlers with Saraswoti Chaudhary and Karuna Bhandari taking two wickets apiece. Sonu Khadka, Rubina Chhetry and Sita Magar also grabbed one wicket each for nepal.
Neera Rajopadhyay top scored with a painstaking 34-ball 16 in a hapless Nepali batting. Karuna Bhandari (15) was the next best with the bat while Mamta Chaudhary (11) was the only other batswoman to score in double figure.
Yu Miao (3-22) and Han Lili (3-21) were pick of the Chinese bowlers. Zhou Haijie also claimed two while Wang Meng and Wu Juan snared one scalp each for China. Nepal skipper Rubina Chhetry (6), who struck a fastest century in domestic cricket last month, blamed lack of proper training for her team’s disappointing performance.
Nepal coach Umesh Raj Upadhyaya said the green and bouncy pitch was too much to handle for his side. “We are used to playing at flat pitches at the Tribhuvan University ground but it’s just the opposite here,” said Upadhyaya.
Meanwhile, the former prince Paras Shah was among the handful of fans to cheer the Nepali team.
